Books for Schools
Each year, Beta Theta gathers new or gently used books to donate to teachers in the region. These books help start or enrich classroom libraries without requiring teachers to foot the bill themselves. If you have any books you'd wish to donate or know of a teacher who may benefit from this program, contact Bonnie Hindman at [email protected]
Little Dresses for Africa
Beta Theta began its service project in 2012 following the lead of the Michigan based non-profit organization founded by Rachel O’Neil in 2008, formally known as “Little Dresses for Africa.” Beta Theta members were inspired to share their time and resources to fill a need and send hope to little girls in another part of the world. And so a small group gathered at the home of Norma Mateer and began sewing dresses using donated pillowcases and fabric and the pattern posted online. Norma also found a volunteer to transport the dresses directly to African schools. Approximately 200 dresses have been made and members are still sewing. One cottage meeting is organized each year to sew (in a production line) while having a good time chatting. Some members take dresses to complete at home. Sewing is generally done in the winter months and about 40-50 dresses are completed each year. We hope to make a difference one little dress at a time! Beta Theta has contributed to this project for several years and would welcome anyone who wants to join in the fun. If you're interested in joining our next Little Dresses for Africa meeting, contact Linda Geesaman at [email protected]
Girl Scouts of America
Beta Theta is embarking on the DKG Girl Scout initiative. On November 1, 2018, Donna Winch, Rosemary Ruhl, Kathy Dunn, Linda Geesaman, Cindy Kerstetter, and President Jeannette Thomas shared our DKG Culture with the Girl Scout troop that meets Chambers Hill. The activities at the scout meeting will share our DKG heritage ( motto, music, founder information, and our “Little Dresses for Africa” project) while relating it to the Girl Scout’s motto, music, and their founder’s information. Through their participation in these activities, the girls will earn the DKG Girl Scout patch, which beautifully displays the red rose of DKG. If you're interested in learning more about this project, contact Cindy Kerstetter.
Grant in Aid
Do you know of someone currently pursuing an education degree? Each year, Beta Theta awards a $1,000 grant ($500 over two semesters) to a promising non-member woman that has completed at least one year of college. Any Beta Theta member may nominate an individual by submitting a letter of nomination to the Chapter President by April 15. Letters of nomination will include the name of the candidate, high school, college (major), awards, community service, extra curricula activities, hobbies, etc. A grant recipient may receive the grant for up to three (3) years, depending on when she was first selected (sophomore, junior or senior year). Beta Theta awards one grant per year. If you have any questions about the Grant-in-Aid program, contact Suzanne Long.
